National Bison Range

The CSKT Bison Range, formerly known as the National Bison Range, is a historic wildlife conservation area situated about an hour north of Missoula, Montana, within the Flathead Indian Reservation. Established in 1908, it spans approximately 18,500 acres of rolling grasslands and foothills, providing sanctuary to a herd of roughly 350 to 500 American bison, along with elk, pronghorn antelope, black bears, and over 200 species of birds . The range's terrain, shaped by ancient glacial activity, offers visitors scenic drives and panoramic views of the Mission Mountains . In a significant move to rectify historical injustices, Congress restored full ownership and management of the range to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes in 2020, acknowledging their deep-rooted connection to the land and the bison herd .
